What to Do If Your Flight is Cancelled in Nigeria

Passenger Rights · Nigeria What to Do If Your Flight is Cancelled in Nigeria

You have real, written-into-law rights the moment an airline cancels your flight — most travellers just never learn them until they're standing at a counter with no answers. Here's exactly what you're owed, and exactly who to go to if the airline won't sort it. By TBILS Travel Desk • IATA-accredited agency, Nigeria • Updated September 2026 • 10 min read

Quick answer

Under Part 19 of the Nigerian Civil Aviation Regulations 2023, an airline that cancels your flight owes you a choice: a full refund, typically within 7 days, or rerouting onto another flight to your destination. If the cancellation is weather-related or otherwise outside the airline's control, you're still entitled to that refund or rerouting — airlines just aren't required to pay additional compensation on top of it. If the airline drags its feet, document everything, ask for a written explanation at the airport, then escalate in order: the airline's customer care team, the NCAA's Consumer Protection Directorate, and finally the Federal Competition and Consumer Protection Commission if it still isn't resolved.

What you're legally entitled to

Nigerian air passenger rights aren't a courtesy an airline extends — they're written into Part 19 of the Nigerian Civil Aviation Regulations 2023 (NCAR), issued by the NCAA under the Civil Aviation Act 2022, and backed separately by the Federal Competition and Consumer Protection Act 2018. Under NCAR, a "cancellation" is defined specifically as a previously planned flight, with at least one seat reserved, that simply doesn't operate. When that happens:

• You're entitled to a full refund of your ticket cost, which the airline is required to process within 7 days — the NCAA has also publicly warned it will penalise airlines whose refunds drag past two weeks.
• Or you can choose rerouting onto another available flight to your original destination instead of a refund, if that better suits your plans.
• You're entitled to be treated with dignity and given a clear explanation, including assistance such as meals or accommodation where the disruption warrants it.
• For international flights, the Montreal Convention, which Nigeria has ratified, adds a further layer of standardised protection on top of NCAR.

None of this requires a lawyer to invoke in the first instance — it's the baseline the airline is required to offer you at the counter.

The escalation ladder: what to do, in order

Most cancellations get resolved at the first step. Keep climbing the ladder only if the one before it doesn't work: 1 Start here

The airline's counter, right there at the airport

Ask directly for a written explanation of the cancellation and your options: refund or rerouting. Get names, take photos of the departure board and any written notice, and keep your boarding pass. ↓ If unresolved 2 Same day

The airline's customer care team

Follow up in writing, by email or the airline's official complaint channel, referencing your booking reference and the specific NCAR Part 19 entitlement you're claiming. A written trail matters more than a phone call if you need to escalate later. ↓ If still unresolved 3 Days to weeks

NCAA's Consumer Protection Directorate

File a formal complaint with the NCAA if the airline hasn't resolved things within a reasonable window, especially once the 7-day refund deadline has passed. The Directorate investigates complaints and can sanction non-compliant airlines directly. ↓ If still unresolved 4 Formal route

FCCPC, or legal advice for larger claims

The Federal Competition and Consumer Protection Commission has previously summoned airlines over unresolved refund complaints and can escalate enforcement further. For high-value or complex claims, this is also the point to consider formal legal advice.

The NCAA's enforcement has real teeth behind it — regulatory pressure on domestic airlines produced over ₦1 billion in passenger refunds industry-wide in a single recent quarter. Most disputes never need to go past step two or three.

Refund or rerouting: which should you actually pick

The regulation gives you the choice, and the right answer depends entirely on what's at stake:

Choose a refund if

Your dates are flexible, you'd rather rebook with a different airline, or the trip itself is no longer necessary. You can then rebook whenever suits you, potentially at a better fare.

Choose rerouting if

You have a fixed commitment on the other end — a visa appointment, a wedding, a connecting international flight — where getting there still matters more than getting your money back quickly.

What changes if the cancellation is weather-related

Your core rights to a refund or rerouting still apply — the flight didn't happen, regardless of why. What typically changes is additional financial compensation beyond that: when a cancellation is caused by genuine safety-critical weather, which is common during Nigeria's rainy season from roughly April through December, airlines aren't generally required to pay extra compensation on top of the refund or rerouting, since the cause is outside their control. It's still worth asking for care such as meals or overnight accommodation if you're stranded, since those obligations are separate from the "extra compensation" question.

Protect yourself before you even get to the airport

• Know that airline compensation and travel insurance are two different things. NCAA rules cover disruptions the airline caused or that affected its operation. A separate travel insurance policy can cover broader situations — personal trip cancellation, missed connections, medical emergencies — that airline compensation doesn't touch.
• Keep every document. Your ticket, boarding pass, any written communication, and screenshots of cancellation notices all strengthen a claim if you need to escalate.
• Book with a flexible or installment-backed fare where you can, particularly around Nigeria's rainy season or its December travel peak, so a cancellation is a rebooking, not a financial crisis.

Frequently asked questions

Under Part 19 of the NCAR 2023, you're entitled to a full refund, typically within 7 days, or rerouting onto another flight to your destination, plus assistance such as meals or accommodation where the disruption warrants it. How long does an airline have to refund a cancelled flight in Nigeria?

NCAR 2023 requires airlines to process a refund for a cancelled flight within 7 days. The NCAA has separately warned it will penalise airlines whose refunds drag past two weeks. What's the difference between a refund and rerouting after a cancellation?

A refund returns your ticket cost so you can rebook however and whenever you choose. Rerouting puts you on another available flight to your original destination instead. The regulation lets you choose whichever fits your situation. Do I still get compensation if my flight is cancelled due to bad weather?

You're still entitled to a refund or rerouting, since the flight didn't operate regardless of cause. Airlines generally aren't required to pay additional financial compensation on top of that when the cancellation is genuinely weather-related and outside their control. What do I do if the airline won't resolve my cancelled flight?

Escalate in order: request a written explanation at the airport, follow up in writing with the airline's customer care team, file a formal complaint with the NCAA's Consumer Protection Directorate, and if still unresolved, escalate to the FCCPC or seek legal advice for larger claims. Does travel insurance cover the same things as airline cancellation compensation?

No. Airline compensation under NCAA rules covers disruptions the carrier caused or that affected its own operation. Travel insurance is a separate product that can cover a broader range of situations, including personal trip cancellation, missed connections, and medical emergencies.
