Quick answer: In the Henley Passport Index (July 2026), the Nigerian passport ranks 90th, with access to about 44 destinations without a prior visa. That includes visa-free entry, visa on arrival and some electronic authorisations. Rules change often, so confirm with the destination's official immigration site before you book.
Three types of entry: know the difference
- Visa-free: you can enter without applying in advance, for a set number of days.
- Visa on arrival: you get the visa at the airport, usually for a fee, with documents checked.
- eTA or e-visa: you apply online before travel. This is easier than an embassy visit but it is not "no visa".
Different lists count these differently, which is why you will see different numbers online.
Easy-entry destinations to consider
Always verify stay lengths and conditions on the official government site, because they change.
Caribbean
- Barbados: reported visa-free stay of up to 180 days.
- Dominica: reported visa-free stay of up to 180 days.
- Haiti: reported visa-free stay of up to 90 days.
Africa
- Rwanda: easy entry for many African passports, with stay length around 90 days reported. Check current conditions.
- Kenya: now requires an eTA, so apply online before you fly.
- Many other African countries offer visa-free or visa-on-arrival access to Nigerians, partly through regional agreements. Check the specific country.
## Visa-free does not mean hassle-free
Passing immigration still depends on your preparation. Expect to be asked for:
1. A passport valid for at least 6 months, with blank pages.
2. A confirmed return or onward ticket.
3. Proof of accommodation, such as a hotel booking.
4. Proof of funds for your stay.
5. A yellow fever vaccination card, which many countries require.
Airlines check these at check-in. Missing one can mean you are refused boarding, even if the country does not need a visa.
Watch out for transit visas
Your destination may be visa-free, but your connecting airport may not be. Some transit points require a transit visa for Nigerian passports. For example, UAE transit visas have been reported as not processed for Nigerians, and Turkey's transit rules should be confirmed before booking. Always ask your airline or agent about the connection city, not just the destination.
