How to Choose the Best Seat on a Flight

Flying Smarter How to Choose the Best Seat on a Flight

There's no single "best" seat — there's the best seat for what you actually want out of the flight. And if you're still telling people to check SeatGuru, that tool doesn't exist anymore. Here's what replaced it, and how to pick your seat like you mean it. By TBILS Travel Desk • IATA-accredited agency, Nigeria • Updated September 2026 • 9 min read

Quick answer

The best seat depends on what you're optimising for, not a universal rule. For sleep, take a window seat over the wing in the front half of the cabin. For the smoothest ride, sit over the wing, roughly mid-cabin. For legroom, an exit row or bulkhead seat, selected as early as possible since these go within hours of booking opening. For a fast exit or tight connection, an aisle seat near the front. Whatever you're after, check a real seat map first — SeatGuru shut down in mid-2026, so use a current alternative like AeroLOPA, SeatMaps.com or FlightSeatmap.com instead, and recheck your seat about 48 hours before departure in case the aircraft has been swapped.

The seat map tool that actually works now

If the last piece of seat-selection advice you read said "check SeatGuru," it's out of date. SeatGuru shut down in mid-2026 after two decades as the default tool, and it now simply redirects to Tripadvisor with no sign of returning. A few genuinely good replacements have taken its place: AeroLOPA, which now includes input from SeatGuru's original founder, lets you search by flight number and colour-codes seats as Good, Be Aware, or Avoid based on legroom, galley and lavatory proximity, and window alignment. SeatMaps.com offers a similarly familiar layout with seat pitch, width and recline details. FlightSeatmap.com covers 150+ airlines with real-time colour-coded maps, and AwardFares' seat tool goes a step further by showing which specific seats are actually available, occupied, or blocked on your exact flight, not just the aircraft's general layout.

Whichever tool you use, the two-step process is the same: confirm your aircraft type from your booking confirmation or airline app first, since a 737-800 and a 737 MAX 9 have meaningfully different layouts, then pull up that specific aircraft's map rather than a generic one.

Match your seat to what you actually want

Skip the generic "aisle vs window" debate and start from what actually matters to you on this specific flight: W

Sleeping the whole flight

Window seat, over the wing, front half of the cabin. You control the shade, have a wall to lean on, and won't get bumped by aisle traffic. M

Avoiding turbulence anxiety

Seats over the wing, roughly mid-cabin, sit closest to the aircraft's centre of gravity and generally feel the steadiest air. A

Maximum legroom

Exit rows and bulkhead seats, often 6+ inches more pitch than standard economy. These are claimed within hours of booking opening, so select early. A

A fast exit or tight connection

An aisle seat as close to the front of the cabin as you can get, for the quickest possible path off the aircraft. W

Travelling with an infant

Bulkhead row seats, which typically have extra floor space and are where airlines fit bassinets — request this directly with the airline, since it usually can't be self-selected online. M

Travelling as a group of 3–4

Book everyone in a single transaction, then pick aisle-and-window pairs across the same row rather than a block of middle seats — it keeps the group together while giving everyone aisle access.

Seats to avoid, no matter your priority

• The very last row. Often doesn't recline at all, and sits closest to the lavatories and galley.
• Within three rows of a lavatory or galley. Expect near-constant foot traffic, noise, and light from the galley curtain throughout the flight.
• Seats with a misaligned or missing window. Some aircraft have rows where the seat doesn't line up with a window at all — a seat map will flag this, a booking screen usually won't.
• Exit rows, if you actually want your bag within reach. The extra legroom comes with strict rules: no under-seat storage during the flight and a requirement to stay upright and alert for takeoff and landing.

For long-haul flights out of Lagos and Abuja

International routes from Lagos and Abuja are typically flown on wide-body aircraft such as the Boeing 787, Boeing 777, or Airbus A330/A350, depending on the airline, while domestic routes within Nigeria are mostly narrower single-aisle aircraft. On a wide-body, premium economy is worth a look if it's within budget on a longer route — it typically offers 2–4 more inches of seat pitch than standard economy, and many wide-body premium cabins use window seats in pairs rather than in a bank of three or four, which means more privacy on a shared armrest situation. Whatever cabin you're in, it's worth rechecking your specific seat assignment about 48 hours before departure, since airlines do occasionally swap the aircraft on a route, which can quietly change your seat map entirely.

Booking as a family or group

Most airlines will automatically seat children next to an adult when everyone is booked in the same transaction, even without paying for seat selection — so the simplest fix for family seating anxiety is booking together in one go rather than as separate reservations. Airlines generally treat separately booked passengers as unrelated, even if you tell the check-in desk otherwise, so this one habit avoids most seating headaches before they start.

Timing your seat selection

Airlines typically open seat maps up to 330 days before departure, and the genuinely good seats — exit rows, bulkheads, front-cabin rows — get claimed within hours of that window opening, well before most people have even thought about their flight. Select your seat at the point of booking or as soon afterward as you can, rather than leaving it for check-in, when your remaining options are usually whatever nobody else wanted.

Frequently asked questions

No. SeatGuru shut down in mid-2026 and now redirects to Tripadvisor. Current alternatives include AeroLOPA, SeatMaps.com, FlightSeatmap.com, and AwardFares' seat tool, which also shows real-time seat availability on your specific flight. What is the best seat for sleeping on a long flight?

A window seat over the wing, in the front half of the cabin. You control the window shade, have a wall to lean against, and avoid being disturbed by aisle traffic. Which seats should I avoid on a plane?

The very last row, which often doesn't recline; any seat within three rows of a lavatory or galley, due to noise and foot traffic; and seats with a misaligned or missing window, which a seat map tool will show but a booking screen usually won't. How do I make sure my child sits next to me on the flight?

Book all passengers in the same transaction. Most airlines automatically seat children next to an adult on the same booking, even without paid seat selection, while separate bookings are typically treated as unrelated passengers. When should I select my seat for the best options?

As early as possible, ideally at the time of booking. Airlines open seat maps up to 330 days before departure, and the best seats, including exit rows and bulkheads, are typically claimed within hours of that window opening. What kind of aircraft do international flights from Lagos and Abuja usually use?

Typically wide-body aircraft such as the Boeing 787, Boeing 777, or Airbus A330/A350, depending on the airline, while domestic Nigerian routes are mostly flown on narrower single-aisle aircraft.
