Every nonstop route currently flying out of Nigeria, grouped by region, plus what's about to change: a second international airport in Lagos and a first-ever direct link to Canada are both on the way. By TBILS Travel Desk • IATA-accredited agency, Nigeria • Updated September 2026 • 10 min read
Quick answer
Nigeria's direct international network runs almost entirely through Lagos. Nonstop routes currently connect Lagos to London Heathrow and Gatwick, Paris, Amsterdam, Frankfurt, Dubai, Abu Dhabi, Istanbul, Beirut, Doha, Atlanta, Washington Dulles, New York (seasonal) and Barbados, plus regional African links to hubs like Addis Ababa, Casablanca and Nairobi. Abuja's direct international options are far more limited, currently centred on London via British Airways and Air Peace. There's no direct flight from Nigeria to Canada yet, though Air Canada has targeted 2027 for a Toronto–Lagos route following a new bilateral air agreement — and a second Lagos international airport at Lekki-Epe is set to add capacity for several of these carriers.

Lagos is Nigeria's international gateway
Of Nigeria's airports, Murtala Muhammed International Airport in Lagos carries the overwhelming majority of the country's direct intercontinental connections — more than 50 destinations in total once domestic and regional African routes are included. Abuja has a genuine but much smaller international network, and every other Nigerian airport is effectively domestic-only. If a destination has a nonstop option from Nigeria at all, it's almost always departing from Lagos.

What's new: a second airport and a first Canada route
Two developments are reshaping Nigeria's direct-route map right now. First, a new international airport at Lekki-Epe is set to open in Lagos, intended to relieve congestion at the aging Murtala Muhammed Airport. Several of the carriers already flying to Lagos — including Emirates, British Airways, Delta, Lufthansa, Air France, Qatar Airways and KLM — have been named in connection with projected routes to the new airport, though exact timing and which routes actually move there is still developing, so treat this as an emerging shift rather than a locked schedule.
Second, Nigeria is set to get its first-ever direct flight to Canada. Following a new Canada–Nigeria Air Transport Agreement signed in August 2026, Air Canada has confirmed it's pursuing a nonstop Toronto–Lagos route targeting a 2027 launch. Until then, Canada remains a connecting-flight-only destination from Nigeria.
Abuja's direct options are far more limited
Abuja's Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport carries a genuine international schedule, but it's a fraction of Lagos's network — currently centred on nonstop service to London Heathrow, flown by both British Airways and Air Peace. If your destination isn't London, flying out of Abuja for an international trip usually means either a short domestic connection to Lagos first, or a one-stop international itinerary through a hub city instead of a true nonstop.
Is nonstop always worth booking?
Not necessarily. A direct flight saves time and avoids a layover, but it isn't automatically the cheapest way to travel. On many routes, connecting through a hub carrier's home airport — Ethiopian via Addis Ababa, Turkish Airlines via Istanbul, or Royal Air Maroc via Casablanca — comes in noticeably cheaper than the nonstop option, in exchange for a few extra hours of travel. We cover this trade-off in detail in our guide to finding the cheapest international flights from Nigeria, which is worth a look before assuming nonstop is the only option worth comparing.
Frequently asked questions
Yes. From Lagos, British Airways and Virgin Atlantic fly nonstop to London Heathrow, and Air Peace flies nonstop to London Gatwick. From Abuja, both British Airways and Air Peace fly nonstop to London Heathrow. Is there a direct flight from Nigeria to the USA?
Yes, from Lagos. Delta flies nonstop to Atlanta year-round and seasonally to New York JFK, while United Airlines flies nonstop to Washington Dulles. There is currently no nonstop US service from Abuja. Is there a direct flight from Nigeria to Canada?
Not yet. Canada is currently a connecting-flight-only destination from Nigeria. Air Canada has targeted 2027 for a nonstop Toronto–Lagos route following a new bilateral air agreement signed in August 2026. Is there a direct flight from Nigeria to Dubai?
Yes. Emirates flies nonstop from Lagos to Dubai year-round. Does Abuja have direct international flights?
Yes, but a much smaller network than Lagos. Abuja's international service is currently centred on nonstop flights to London Heathrow with British Airways and Air Peace. Most other international destinations require a domestic connection to Lagos or a one-stop itinerary. What new direct routes are coming to Nigeria?
Air Canada is pursuing a direct Toronto–Lagos route targeting 2027. Separately, a new international airport at Lekki-Epe in Lagos is set to open, with several existing carriers including Emirates, British Airways, Delta, Lufthansa, Air France, Qatar Airways and KLM named in connection with projected routes there, though specifics are still developing.
